Pre-school level: Who can start with their education?

Entering kindergarten requires neither examinations nor enrolment proceedings. Kindergarten attendance is mostly voluntary in Switzerland, however, in 1999 one canton introduced compulsory kindergarten, and other cantons will follow. 98.5 % of children attend a kindergarten. In the majority of the cantons children that have special education needs or are handicapped also have the opportunity to attend kindergarten. Public Kkindergarten attendance is free of charge in Switzerland.
