Universities of teacher education: Who can attend?

The minimum requirements for the admission to the courses are regulated by the Swiss Conference of Cantonal Ministers of Education (EDK).

The compliance with these regulations is stated as a minimum requirement for the recognition of the courses throughout Switzerland.

| a teaching staff diploma that has been recognised by the Swiss Conference of Cantonal Ministers of Education (EDK) or | |
| a degree from a university of applied sciences. |
If the training leads exclusively to a teaching diploma for the pre-School level, bearers of a certificate from a recognised three-year diploma middle school (DMS) or a specialised middle school (Fachmittelschule) are also admitted.
Admittance is granted to those who possess a certificate from a recognised three-year diploma middle school (DMS), a specialised middle school (Fachmittelschule), a commercial school (Handelsmittelschule), a vocational Matura certificate or a certificate following at least a three year vocational training with several years of professional experience (the latter candidates must in addition pass an aptitude test in pedagogics) as well as those with a recognised vocational Matura certificate in the pedagogical field.
Lower secondary level

Admittance is granted to those who possess a certificate from a recognised three-year diploma middle school (DMS), a specialised middle school (Fachmittelschule), a commercial school (Handelsmittelschule), a vocational Matura certificate or a certificate following at least a three year vocational training with several years of professional experience (the latter candidates must in addition pass an aptitude test in pedagogics) as well as those with a recognised vocational Matura certificate in the pedagogical field.

Candidates with a vocational Matura certificate, a recognised specialised middle school certificate, a vocational Matura or a degree from a recognised three-year vocational education with several years of professional experience can be admitted to the course as long as they can prove that they have at least Matura-level general knowledge in the form of an additional exam before they begin to study.
Matura schools
Teaching at this subject requires a Masters or an equivalent degree in the respective field of study from a university. The requisite teacher training can either be undergone after the academic studies or in parallel with them.
